Typography - How to Choose the Right Font for Your Website

Choosing the right font holds a kinship with the feel good factor. When the typography is presentable, then it means that half your job is done. Now that you have successfully crossed this stage, it’s time to take measures for your site to stand out. From graphic designs to web designs typography holds much significance since it is a very vital communication tool. That’s the ultimate goal of communication-getting your message conveyed clearly. With numerous fonts available, choosing the right one is a challenging task for most designers. However, a little bit of experimentation will get you in the groove. Here are a few tips to choose the right font:

1. The Visual Impact:

The moment you read about a subject it should be appealing and the message needs to be conveyed across precisely. It isn’t merely about the size of a font. It has everything to do with the color and the impact it creates in your mind. You can be stylish and include the curves if you are creating a website for fashion designing. When a font seems appealing to you, it doesn’t mean that it’s the ideal choice. It needs to blend with the concept and the mood.

2. The Ultimate Goal:

Usually, it’s the clients who decide what the viewers should see when they read the website.  They will want their audience to react in a particular way and that’s what you need to focus on. Your job is to search for a font style that can meet their expectations.

3. Think Out of the Box:

When designing the right font size for your website, you need to break free from the traditional font designs and be more creative. Explore new ways to write a text message. It could be anything from an ultra thin title to cramped style of fonts. The end result is that it needs to suit the mood of the website and create a lasting impression in the minds of viewers. Just one look needs to be sufficient to remember the site for ages.

4. Matching the Right Design:

Typography is an important aspect of web designing and you should choose the font style keeping the rest of the design in mind. All the other aspects including the finest details need to blend perfectly with the font style. Only then will the message be conveyed across to the target audience.

5. Emotional Design:

Viewers need to relate well with the emotion that you are trying to convey. Emotions could be anything such as joy, sorrow, anger, humor and more. But, if you are trying to bring about smiles in the mind of viewers then your font needs to be chosen accordingly. There are no hard and fast rules to master this skill. You will learn it by trial and error.

Keep all these things in mind. Good luck!

  1. I was impressed w/ your comments about typography… I have created designs for anything from a “coupon book” to large highway signs… one of the best resources I ever found was a book by Mike Stevens, entitled, “Mastering Layout” on the art of eye appeal… you may want to search it out as a personal resource… it would be to your benefit…
